WELCOME!

To those who have found this page!

This site is dedicated to The Wandering Bear Wellness Blog and Newsletter. It may, at some point, have a rhyme or reason, but for now, it is a place for questioning one's beliefs, a place for deeper connection—to self, the land around you, and others. It is not here to make you feel good about yourself or judge. It is merely a place to open up a conversation about the world we live in, with the intention of breaking free, or at least beginning to break free, from that which no longer serves our best interest.

May you find your story in my writing. May you begin to question your beliefs, and may you find joy in the mystery of life.

Holistic Nutrition: My Approach Inspired by the CHEK Institute and Weston A. Price

Nutrition, to me, is far more than calories and macronutrients; it is the foundation of health, vitality, and our connection to the natural world. My perspective on nutrition is deeply influenced by the teachings of the CHEK Institute, founded by Paul Chek, and the work of Weston A. Price. Together, these frameworks provide a powerful blend of ancestral wisdom, modern science, and holistic health principles.

My Approach Through the CHEK Institute Lens

Paul Chek’s teachings have profoundly shaped my understanding of nutrition. He emphasizes that nutrition is deeply personal, based on the principle of biochemical individuality—no single diet suits everyone. Here are the core principles I live by:

  1. Eat Real Food: I avoid processed and packaged foods, which are stripped of nutrients and loaded with harmful additives. Instead, I prioritize whole, organic, and minimally processed foods to nourish my body.

  2. Listen to Your Body: The CHEK approach taught me to become my own health detective. I’ve learned to pay attention to how foods make me feel and use this as a guide to what works for my body.

  3. The Four Doctors Framework: Paul Chek’s concept of the "Four Doctors"—“Dr. Quiet,” “Dr. Diet,” “Dr. Movement,” and “Dr. Happiness”—has shaped how I see the interconnectedness of nutrition, rest, movement, and emotional well-being.

  4. Nutrient Density Over Quantity: I don’t count calories. Instead, I focus on the quality of my food, choosing nutrient-dense options that fuel my body with the vitamins, minerals, and energy it needs to thrive.

  5. Support Gut Health: Gut health is foundational to overall health. I’ve made it a priority to avoid inflammatory foods, include fermented foods, and sometimes supplement with probiotics to maintain a balanced microbiome.

My Learnings from Weston A. Price

Weston A. Price’s research into traditional diets has been a cornerstone of my nutritional philosophy. His work revealed how ancestral diets—rich in nutrient-dense, natural foods—promoted exceptional health and physical development. Here are some key lessons I’ve adopted:

  1. Embrace Traditional Diets: I’ve incorporated nutrient-dense animal foods, healthy fats, and unprocessed carbohydrates into my diet, as these were staples in the diets of the robust and healthy traditional societies Price studied.

  2. Healthy Fats Are Essential: Price’s findings reinforced my belief in the importance of natural fats like butter, organ meats, fatty fish, and coconut oil. These fats are critical for hormone production, brain health, and cellular function.

  3. Fermented Foods and Beverages: I include fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and kombucha in my diet to support digestion and immune health.

  4. Avoid Modern Refined Foods: I steer clear of refined sugars, flours, and oils, which Price linked to rapid declines in health among populations transitioning to industrialized diets.

  5. The Power of Bone Broth: Bone broth has become a staple for me, providing collagen, gelatin, and minerals that promote gut health and joint repair.

How I Combine CHEK and Weston A. Price Principles

By integrating these two powerful philosophies, I’ve crafted an approach to nutrition that aligns with my unique needs and respects the wisdom of nature:

  • Know Your Ancestry and Environment: I choose foods that resonate with my genetic heritage and the natural environment I live in. For example, I thrive on seasonal vegetables, pasture-raised meats, and nutrient-rich fats.

  • Sustainability Matters: Supporting local farmers and regenerative agriculture is important to me. This ensures I’m eating food that’s not only healthy for me but also for the planet.

  • Mindful Eating Practices: I make mealtime a sacred act. I sit down for meals, chew thoroughly, and express gratitude for the food and the life it nourishes.

Takeaway: Nutrition as a Lifestyle

For me, nutrition isn’t just about what I eat; it’s about how I live. By following these principles, I’m not only supporting my physical health but also fostering a deeper connection to the earth and honoring the wisdom of our ancestors. True vitality and well-being come from aligning with nature and respecting the life force within us and around us.

So, whether I’m enjoying a rich bone broth, savoring a colorful plate of seasonal vegetables, or mindfully preparing a meal, I remember that food is far more than sustenance—it’s life itself.

I am a certified Holistic Health Lifestyle and Integrative Movement Coach through the Chek Institute and I guide wilderness-based rites of passage to assist people with life transition.

I was born in Western Alaska during a winter storm on the Kuskokwim River steeped in the wisdom of knowing where my food comes from - catching salmon, gathering berries in the summer, and hunting Caribou and Moose in the fall and winter.

For many years I lived as a wanderer, finding work as a carpenter, welder, and mechanic throughout the West until I stumbled upon The Wilderness Awareness School which grounded me and reminded me of the old ways of living. Remembering that my purpose for being on this planet was to bring ceremony back to his lineage.

I found a home in Port Townsend Washington where I am currently reside, and work as a Structural Integrator (Rolfer), Holistic Health Coach, and a Rites of Passage guide running Wandering Bear Wellness.

In my spare time, you can find me singing rain down from the sky, meditating, studying, fishing, and midnight flower picking.
